CLEFT LIP AND PALATE
Cleft lips and cleft palates arise from a congenital defect where the facial structures do not completely fuse together. At FCLA, our expert surgeons are able to reconstruct the facial structure gap so that no one will be able to tell that a patient suffered from this condition.
Patients may require multiple procedures including surgery at infancy and potentially again at maturity to fully address the complications of a cleft lip and palate. Our team of experts work closely with cleft lip and palate patients to help with the timing of surgical and orthodontic procedures required to optimize outcomes.
Doctors Schendel and Broujerdi have extensive experience treating cleft lip and palates and work the Smile Train to provide surgery to underprivileged children in developing countries.

IMPACTED TEETH
Teeth become impacted when they are physically blocked beneath the surface of the gum - often within the bone of the upper or lower jaw - rather than erupting into the mouth. Canines and molars are the most commonly impacted teeth and cannot be easily detected during a simple dental examination without appropriate imaging.
Undetected impacted canines can cause irreparable damage to other permanent teeth. However, losing permanent teeth due to an impacted canine is mostly preventable, provided the problem is diagnosed early. FCLA uses the most sophisticated 3-D imaging technology available to detect impacted teeth. Once impacted teeth are diagnosed, appropriate orthodontic treatment can be prescribed to guide these teeth into their ideal positions.
The featured 3-D image displays an impacted canine near the nose.

WISDOM TEETH
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last permanent teeth to grow in - usually appearing between ages 16 and 25. They can pose problems when they are impacted, grow in sideways, or grow in at an angle, and the jaw cannot accommodate them.
Studies show that extracting the wisdom teeth before the roots have fully developed is optimal, usually between the ages of 14-18. State of the art 3-D imaging (such as that displayed) combined with precise timing results in shorter surgery and recovery times.
Wisdom tooth extraction is an outpatient procedure. A few patients do not require extraction, but wisdom teeth should be monitored because they can cause pain, shifting of the teeth and bite, and bony defects.
